An article in the Mainichi News described a growing trend in Akihabara (the otaku hangout of Tokyo) of dressing kegadoru-literally meaning ‘injured idols’. Instead of maids and eyeglasses, cosplayers dress themselves as if they have an injury, including eye patches and bandages. For years the trend in favour of otakus’ was moe or lolita, cute and passive.
Psychologists theorize that this is another version of dress in which the males see a weak figure and want to protect them. This is probably in response to a society of more and more strong women and mens need to look after and care for someone not being needed.
