Digital Manga Licenses Kaoru Tada’s Manga Itazura na Kiss.

Digital Manga recently announced the acquisition of the rights to the manga Itazura na Kiss (Mischievous Kiss) by Kaoru Tada. Publishing of double-sized volumes will begin November 2009, and the second volume will be released March 2010.

Itazura na Kiss ran for 23 volumes, with serialization beginning in 1991 in the magazine Margaret. The plot, which has many features considered standard today, was innovative for its time, as it predates many well-known shoujo manga that utilizes many of the same plot devices, such as Sand Chronicles (love maturing over time), Marmalade Boy, (two teens live together after their parents remarry), and Hot Gimmick (sweet girl and smart but emotionally dim guy).

This manga is unfinished due to the untimely death of the Kaoru Tada, the mangaka, in 1999. As to that, Michelle Mauk of DMP stated that it is unfinished beyond where most traditionaly shoujo manga actually end, and it is a good story with engrossing characters first and foremost. In fact, the producers of the anime series based on the manga that was televised in Japan in 2008 received permission and guidance from Tada-sensei’s husband to complete the story as she had originally planned.

Another famous manga written by Kaoru Tada was Aishite Night.
